This season as millions of men sit down to watch the big NFL game every week they may be on the verge of the biggest scrimmage of their life and not even know it. Every year, thousands of men are diagnosed with prostate cancer at a stage which places them in a much more difficult position in terms of a successful fight. Prostate cancer can destroy your sex life, steal your manhood, ruin your future, and potentially kill you at a very early age. It is the second leading cause of natural death from disease or condition for men behind heart attacks. But it doesn’t have to be this way, early detection means earlier, more effective, and less damaging treatments that can get you into remission and save your life and your manhood. In other words, if you take the right steps you will be in a better field position to score a touchdown that could save your life.
Cancer treatment centers of America partnered with the National Football League Alumni Association, and LabCorp this season to offer prostate cancer screenings during the month of September. The screenings were part of an extensive effort by both organizations to get men to see a doctor and get screened. The program offered free prostate cancer screening to the first 2,000 men who met eligibility requirements and ran from September 1st to October 15th. Even after the first 2,000 free screenings were filled the option to get a screening at the reduced price of $25 was offered though PSA spots. The screening could be scheduled at any time during the six months following the campaign.
One in seven men will at some point in their lifetime be diagnosed with some form of prostate cancer. This number is up from just a decade and a half ago. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 160,000 new cases of Prostate cancer will be reported by the end of 2017. The NFLAA holds this cause pretty close to the jersey as many players, owners, coaches, and trainers have lost a father, grandfather, uncle, brother, or son to prostate cancer. They want to help ensure that no one has to continue to deal with the needless loss of a male loved one, or see a man in their life have his virility, happiness, and future destroyed when prevention and treatment are so readily available today. The key is to spread awareness, and educate men of all ages as to the importance of getting screened, and have perhaps the most important conversation they can ever have with their doctor.
CTCA also held additional screening and awareness events at each of their four major treatment campuses in the United States. The care centers located in Atlanta, GA, Phoenix, AZ, Chicago, IL, and Tulsa, OK all held events that helped to get men screened and educate them about a killer that may stay silent, rampaging through their systems for years before signs develop. Often when a man notices signs of a problem that could be prostate cancer, it is too late for simple and effective treatment options.
